Jules Verne

1828 - 1905

Jules Verne was born in 1828, in Nates, France. Jules' parents were of a seafaring tradition, one factor which influenced his writings. As a boy, he ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for theater grew and from 1848 he wrote opera libretti.

In 1863 his first novel Five Weeks in a Balloon was published. He struck a new vein in fiction writing by describing adventures carried out by means of scientific invention in exotic places, like submarines and space travel.

He achieved huge popularity in his life time and greatly influenced the early work of H.G. Wells.
