Charles Kingsley

1819 - 1875

Charles Kingsley was born at Holne vicarage in Dartmore, England. He went to Magdalene College, Cambridge, and took a classical first in 1842. He was curate and then rector(1844) in Eversley, Hampshire. In 1860 he was appointed Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, But he resigned in 1869 and became canon of Chester. He took a voyage to the West Indies in 1869-70. And in 1873 he was appointed canon of Westminster and chaplain to Queen Victoria.
