Arthur Conan Doyle
1859 - 1930
Scottish born and raised, Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle will be best remembered for his creation of that detective extraordinaire, Sherlock Holmes.
In order to supplement his meagre earnings as a medical practitioner, he turned to writing. Doyle’s first piece appeared in ‘Chambers Journal’ while his first book was serialized. This series on the detective escapades of Sherlock Holmes and his faithful side-kick, Dr. Watson, (The Sign of Four 1890; The Hound of Baskervilles 1902) captured his readers imagination so much that when Doyle tried to kill of Holmes, he had to revive him in a follow up story.
He earned a knighthood in 1902 for his pamphlet ‘The War in South Africa’ - he served as a physician in the 2nd Boer War. He also wrote on spiritualism and historical romances ‘Micah Clarke’ (1887).
